What is Crude Palm Stearin?

First of all, let’s get to know about a substance known as Palm Stearin.

In technical words, it consists of a major portion of Glyceryl tripalmitate, and the rest is glyceryl dipalmitate monooleate. Let’s put a comparison between fatty acid composition, typically soft palm stearin might contain up to 50% palmitic acid and at least 35% oleic acid.

This is all about pure Palm Stearin, which on other hand is purified but we are interested in Crude Palm Stearin.

Crude palm stearin is the high-melting fraction of crude palm oil obtained through a single-stage or multi-stage fractionation.

Let’s get to know some of the characteristics of Crude Palm Stearin.

Color

Crude Palm Stearin is observed to be reddish yellow in color, which is bright and clear, whereas on the other hand bleached palm stearin is orange-yellow while deodorized or refined palm stearin is light yellow and clear.

About its odor

All palm stearin products shall be free from foreign and rancid odor

Crude palm Stearin price may vary according to the region while it may be cheap in some places where there is an abundant source whereas some places price might be quite high.

Some of its uses include:

Crude Palm Stearin is a useful natural hard stock for making trans-free fats.  It is proved to be an excellent feedstock for oleochemicals. It is also used in formulating animal feeds, besides it also has suitable properties for making soaps.

A solid fraction obtained from palm stearin is palm oil by the process of fractionation. It is used for functional products such as vanaspati, shortenings, and margarine fats.

One of the major uses of palm stearin is that it contains properties that are suitable for making laundry soaps and for animal feeds. Trans-free fats are made using Palm Stearin. Feedstock for oleochemicals is another important application of Palm Stearin.

Crude Palm Stearin Specifications:

Various types of Palm stearin can be obtained depending on the process they are in:

  1. Crude Palm Stearin
  2. Neutralized Palm Stearin
  3. Neutralized Bleached Palm Stearin
  4.  Refined Bleached and Deodorized Palm Stearin (refined)
  5. Bleached Palm Stearin
  6. Food Grade Packaging Material

Let’s understand each one of them in detail:

Crude Palm Stearin is derived from a process known as fractionation. Fractionation of crude palm oil is done to obtain crude palm stearin.

Neutralized palm stearin is a product which is obtained by the process of fractionation. Fractionation of crude palm oil is neutralized with alkali carried out by further processing. One thing to note here is that it is not edible.

Neutralized bleached palm stearin is obtained by the same process as neutralized palm stearin with only one more added process which involved bleaching palm stearin with bleaching earth.

Food grade packaging material is made safe and suitable for foods, which implies it will not add any undesirable odor or flavor to the item.

Refined Bleached Palm Stearin is a byproduct obtained from the process of fractionation. Fractionation of bleached palm oil is involved.

Bleached Palm Stearin is reacted with food-grade bleaching agents simply for the purpose of coloring pigment and mostly for removing impurities.
