What is Crude Palm Stearin Used For?

First of all, what do we mean by palm stearin?

Palm Stearin is actually a composition of few things. Palm oil is composed of 50 percent saturated fatty acids which are solid in-state and 50 percent of unsaturated fatty acids which are liquid in the state.

The liquid fraction is called the Palm Olein which can be packaged and sold as cooking oil and the solid fraction is called Palm Stearin and this is called the real palm stearin and these are used as margarine and vegetable ghee.

The specifications for crude palm oil contain Free Fatty Acid Max 0.2%, Moisture and impurities Max 0.15%, Iodine Value gI2/100 g Max 48, Colour 5 1/4, Slip Melting Point Min 44 degree Celcius.

Crude Palm Stearin (CPS) Applications

Crude palm stearin can be used in a variety of applications such as dairy products, dough, sugar candies, margarine, etc which comes under the food industry.

As we know the consistency of the crude palm oil can be hard or soft, depending on the fact that it is used in several products in the non-food industry.

If the consistency of the crude palm oil is soft then it can be used in Lubricants, Moulding, and Plasticine and Candles that can be beaten in a container.

For hard consistency of crude palm oil, it can be used in Crayons, Wax Coatings, Candles, Color Pencils.

Crude Palm Stearin is majorly used in two industry which are 

  • Food Industry

In the food industry, palm stearin is used as vegetable fat for food applications. 

  • Detergent Industry

The hardening fraction of stearin is used in soap manufacturing. Stearin is mixed with sodium hydroxide solution in water to produce soap.
