Characteristics & Properties of PFAD

As discussed earlier, Palm Fatty Acid Distillate(PFAD) is a low-cost product as it is a by-product of the edible palm oil manufacturing process.

Earlier to this blog we have already discussed some topics such as Palm Fatty Acid Distillate uses, palm kernel fatty acid distillate, palm fatty acid distillate price. Now without further ado, let’s take a deep look at how useful Palm Fatty Acid Distillate is in various industries.

Palm Fatty Acid Distillate is a core raw material for chemical industries such as plastics, medium grade, animal foods, and many intermediate products. One of its newly discovered applications is that it can be used as an ingredient for producing biodiesel as it contains Free Fatty Acid(FFA) which is produced from Palm Fatty Acid Distillate.

It has the potential to be used as a low-cost palm biofuel feedstock. Basically, the refining process of Palm Fatty Acid Distillate involves three steps mainly degumming, bleaching, and deodorization. Palm Fatty Acid Distillate has a high content of FFA(Free Fatty Acid).

In terms of physical appearance, Palm Fatty Acid Distillate is semi-solid at room temperature. In chemical substances, the color of a substance plays a very important role in determining the purity of it. It is yellow-red in color due to the presence of Vitamin E, squalene, and other substances.

It mainly because of the presence of tocopherols and phytosterols, it has major applications in foods as well as cosmetic industries. Non-food industries like the preparation of feed and soaps also use Palm Fatty Acid Distillate.

Nowadays, it’s a trend adapted by industries to utilize cheap byproducts to prepare valuable products for commercial products. Based on the composition of Palm Fatty Acid Distillate, its application differs. The present study shows that Palm Fatty Acid Distillate can be obtained from different edible oil industries for free fatty acid composition.

PFAD is proven to be inedible. It has a high viscosity, which can be reduced by blending it with diesel fuel. High production cost is one of the drawbacks of palm oil biodiesel. This high cost is due to its low free fatty acids content combined with the high quality of virgin oil.

Due to this reason, Palm Fatty Acid Distillate came into action as it is cheaper than Palm Oil Biodiesel. Economically it is quite reasonable for industries to produce biodiesel using Palm Fatty Acid Distillate.

Another advantage of Palm Fatty Acid Distillate is its availability at a low cost, non-food source feedstock. Palm Fatty Acid Distillate as compared to other products such as Refined Bleached Deodorized(RBD) Palm oil, RBD Palm Olein, and RBD Palm Stearin which are higher in cost as compared to Palm Fatty Acid Distillate.

Palm Fatty Acid Distillate specifications contain mainly Free Fatty Acids about 70%, moisture and impurities, and Saponifiable matter. Palm Fatty Acid Distilled uses is mostly a debate of “food vs fuel” and it is generally sold as an industrial fatty acid source. One of its uses is in power plants.

Palm Fatty Acid Distillate contains other impurities that make it less stable which results in short storage. This is one of the reasons why Palm Fatty Acid Distillate is more preferred to purchase which may affect the biodiesel quality.
